Paul lived a life of service in which he poured continuously into the lives of those around him. Even whilst in prison, Paul wrote letters of encouragement to his churches and their leaders.

In the letter to Titus, Paul wrote to encourage and instruct Titus on how to effectively lead his church. The responsibility to teach and encourage others is not only the task of those in the office or with the title of Pastors, Leaders, Prophets or Teachers.

It is the responsibility of everyone in the Kingdom of God. On your way to the moon, there will be people who are at various stages of their journey. They might just be starting off, perhaps have lost their way, or are struggling in an area that you have already encountered and succeeded in.

Just as you sought mentors to advise and direct you on your journey, aim to be a mentor in someone else’s journey.

To you, your achievements might seem small and mistakes great but God can still use you to speak to His children. Yield to the leading of the Spirit in your life and ask Him to open your eyes to those around you who you can be a blessing to.

Today, choose to become a source of teaching, encouragement and inspiration to someone else.

It is finished.

Nothing is more satisfying than when God answers your prayers for inspiration and fills your pages with words to edify and encourage the body of Christ, in this case young people.

I have just finished my second book, title known but to be announced which I believe is a MUST READ for every 16 – 25 year old who would like to find and walk in the God given purpose for their lives.

My purpose is simple; to educate, encourage and empower you to ’be the best you that you were created to be ^{©Elizabeth Babatunde 1995′}. I am living that purpose and enjoying every minute of it.

I want to really appreciate everyone who has supported me in one way or another, everyone who is following my blog and everyone who has bought my book, ‘Fear No More’. Join me as I give thanks to God for everything that He has done and is still doing in my life.

From the bottom of my heart, my prayer is that you find your purpose and learn how to walk in it.

In the buzz of a brand new year, many of us develop the ‘I can’t wait to start all over again’ syndrome. Some have said to themselves, ‘I am going to do something different this year, start something new and amazing that will change my life, maybe even the world’. They have viewed the 10 second countdown at midnight that shifted the world from 2010 into 2011 as a ticket into a parallel world where for a brief period they believe things would be different this year. That is until a day like today, Tuesday 4^th of January 2011, the first working day of the year and everyone’s back to work as usual. The year has changed, the date has changed but we are still the same persons with the same responsibilities as last year.

The only way we can make each year count is by having a vision and running with it. In my previous post, ‘Write the Vision and make it plain’ http://elizabethfbabatunde.wordpress.com/2011/01/02/write-the-vision-and-make-it-plain/ , I describe how and why it is important to have written goals for the year ahead. However, I want to share a word of caution that God gave me with other eager and enthusiastic goal writers like myself. He reminded me that although it is exciting to set and write new goals for the new year, we also have to pay attention to goals that weren’t achieved or unfinished projects from 2010. It is tempting to abandon our unfinished projects of 2010 and move onto something completely different because ‘January is the month of new beginnings’. However there is wisdom in finishing off what we already started.

So I heeded His caution and wrote my goals for 2011 with 2010 in mind. In the same vein, I urge you to define worthy projects from the past year which could be brought into the new. There will be goals that we have to let go of and just accept that they will not be achieved. These tend to be goals that seemed like a good idea at the time they were written but which we do not deeply believe in or have any true desire in their achievement.

As a result, 12 months later, we return to our list of goals and realise that for the 3^rd year running, we still have not yet climbed Mount Kilimanjaro. So if there are any goals that you have not achieved from the previous year, ask yourself this question, is this goal worth writing again? If the goal had been written with a clear vision or end in mind, the chances are that it probably warrants achievement. If not then perhaps it is time to let go of that dream that will not add to your destiny.

Avoid the temptation to turn the yearly vision exercise into a time of starting new projects whilst forgetting or abandoning old ones. A new year offers the opportunity to develop and build on the victories of the previous year. Make the decision not to be a short term person or half starter. It is important to take the step to start something but remember that it is those who finish the race who will get the prize.

Usually by the end of the previous year, I already have bigger and better goals for the next. December 31^st meets me at a time of anticipation, eager to leave the past year behind and enter into a new, miraculous year in which all I plan will definitely happen for me. This year has been somewhat different. It has taken me several days longer to come up with my vision and goals for 2011. Why? Because I was looking for something new, more extravagant than I had envisioned for 2010 to come to me. I wanted to have greater achievement in 2011.

Instead I realised that for 2011, the overall vision was not so different from that of 2010. The 12 months of 2010 had just made it clearer and moved me closer to its achievement. So half an hour ago, sat in my car with the street lamps as my only light, I wrote a similar vision for 2011 as I did for last year. However this time it was better articulated and more precise. This time I built on the foundation I had developed in 2010 eager to establish and perfect the many projects I had already started.

Your vision should be a reflection of who God is developing you to become as each year progresses. Work with the overall vision that God has for your life in mind and create goals as steps that will aid you in achieving that vision. Remember, life is a journey, not a destination. A new year does not necessarily warrant a new vision but if you are to be successful in 2011, there will need to be a wiser you, let God be your Divine Guide.

Crucial key to success in 2011

Setting goals as a GP Registrar is an important aspect of clinical training. In the e-portfolio, you are urged to write your goals for each placement; how you are going to achieve them and then return to document the outcome of that goal. It is called creating a PDP or Personal Development Plan.

At my first GP e-portfolio assessment in November 2010, my supervisor went through all my goals and analysed each one. Her main critique was that my goals were too broad and non-specific, thereby making it difficult to assess whether I had achieved them or not. I was not able to show her justifiable evidence that I had gained an understanding of managing ‘all complex medical problems in the elderly’ because the goal in the first instance was too big to quantify. So she took the time to explain how I could make my goals SMART; specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and timely.

Every December I go through my goals from the previous year and perform a tick exercise on whether I achieved each one or not. My love for writing means that I have notepads and papers floating around with goals, dreams and vision on it for every stage of my life for every year, sometimes months, weeks and days. It always feels great for me to be able to tick the things I wrote down at the beginning that were achieved 12 months later.

However for 2011, I decided to use a different approach for evaluating my goals from 2010. I didn’t simply tick the things I had achieved; I reviewed each goal, asked myself why I had written it down in the first place, why it was achieved or not achieved and was it still a goal worth writing again for 2011.

Like my supervisor had noted, I learnt that my yearly goals so far had not all been SMART. There was a pattern emerging in which the goals I had achieved were the ones that were well articulated. The goals that had not been achieved on the other hand were because they were vague, unrealistic, poorly defined and I had attempted to do too much in the 12 months I had. So for 2011, I have decided to make wiser goals. If you would like to do the same, apply the points below when making your goals.

• Write your overall vision for the year – this can be one or more lines. It can be a whole A4 page. It doesn’t matter. Just write where you would like to be at the end of the year and what you would like to have achieved by December 2011. If it helps get a picture that represents your vision and place it somewhere you can see it on a daily basis.

• Break your goals into smaller pieces – it is always good to write down your bigger picture. However you must make sure you break that bigger picture into the smaller steps you have to take to achieve it. It might help to put them into categories so that they are easier to remember. How do you eat a whole elephant? One bite at a time. In the same way, tackle that big dream or vision in small bite size chunks.

• Prioritise your goals – not everything in your life has the same significance although some things might be of equal importance. By prioritising your goals, you are able to allocate a greater amount of time to more important things and avoid wasting time on trivial matters. You can also prioritise your goals based on the order they need to occur not just importance. For example, there might be an important exam you need to take in August but you have to do online modules before you can apply for that exam. Therefore you might want to assign January to April to completing your modules, May to July for studying and revision for the exam and August for the exam itself. There is no reason to worry about the exam in January because it is not a priority at the time.

• Write clear, precise goals – once the goals have been broken down into smaller steps, try to articulate them as plainly and simply as possible. Imagine somebody else reading your vision and goals for 2011. Would they be able to run with it if you were not there to explain it to them? Simplifying your goals makes it easier for you to remember them 7, 8 or 9 months down the line.

• Review your progress frequently – avoid the New Year’s Resolution syndrome. Many people start the year with a resolution to do something and break it almost as soon as the year just started. Instead, have a vision, set goals as steps towards that vision and review them frequently to see whether you are still on track to achieve them. This can both encourage you when you are making progress and motivate you when you are slacking behind.

• Plan this year with the following year in mind – one of my main problems is that I crammed too many goals for myself within a 1 year period and have inevitably had to pass over unachieved goals from a previous year to the next. When making your goals in 2011, remember that by God’s grace, you will make it to 2012. There is no rush to do it all in 1 year. Avoid putting pressure on yourself. Spread some goals over a 2 year, 5 year or even longer period if necessary.

Most importantly when planning the year ahead, write with God by your side. Ask Him to show you what He has planned and where He wants to take you in 2011. This will form the basis of the vision you see. Then with His guidance, you can begin to create goals as steps towards that vision.

In 2010, I achieved many of the goals I had written down at the beginning of the year. There are still some major goals I haven’t achieved yet which I took to God and asked why that was. Iwanted to now if I needed to work harder, pray more or have more faith. Instead God showed me how although I had not achieved those specific goals, He had been working to prepare me for them. He showed me significant events and experiences in 2010 which I had learnt from and have served as tools to expand my thinking and sharpen my faith.

For 2011, I have not written many different goals to 2010. Instead I am expectant and eager to see how God brings to pass the vision He has for the year, excited at the prospect that by December 2011, I will be a better person, a more loving Christian and brighter light for Christ by His grace.

The concepts, ideas and insights God revealed to me during my one year personal study into overcoming fear has been translated succinctly into printed words.

Honestly, I cannot believe that for my first book, I have written just over 33,000 words with 13 chapters including the introduction.  Even now, I have many more concepts God is showing me that I could include to give some of the chapters more depth.

So what next?

Well I’ve split my journey into different stages.

• Writing:  as it says on the tin
• Pre – Production:  editing and preparation of manuscript
• Production:  printing and production of hard copy of book
• Post – Production:  marketing, distribution and sales of book

The writing period is almost over.  At this point, it is unlikely I am going to add new concepts to the manuscript.  Any additions will be to simply add depth and build on previous chapters.

Pre – Production

This is the stage I am in now.  It involves preparing the manuscript for printing and for me, the beginning of my marketing strategy.

In order to prepare the manuscript for printing, I have researched several editors and finally chose one.  She does editing, copy writing, etc and has edited books for many well known authors including the legendary Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo, one of my role models.  If all goes according to plan, my editor should be able to get the book ready for print by the beginning of next month.

I have also given the finished copy to my bible school dean from King’s College of Excellence who has been following the development of the book right from its baby stages.  He has been reviewing some of the theological insights I share in the book and has given positive reviews so far.

I am currently praying and looking for book clubs and writing groups that I can approach to read the finished copy and give me some much needed feedback.  So if you know any, simply leave a comment below.

As mentioned earlier, I really want to get started with the marketing but I haven’t actually worked out a specific marketing strategy yet.  I suppose I better get going.

So there you have it; an update on my progress.  I pray that after all is done, this book is as a great a success as God has shown me it will be.

But more importantly, I pray it changes the life of all those who read it and enables them to walk in the freedom available in Christ, Amen.
